Sing Your Day Happy (And My Really Amateur Attempt at a Video Post)

Vina Sings Solo

Some days there won’t be a song in your heart.  Sing anyway.  ~Emory Austin

I love to sing. I swear I wanted to be a singer when I was really really young. In fact, when I was around, oh maybe 9-10 years old (I don’t do well with facts), I joined a singing competition at church and totally embarrassed my mother by making my own song, words, melody and all!

(And no, I didn’t win in case you were wondering. My talent was very much in the…raw!)

But I’m sure you know how dreams die an early death. Someone you respect and love chastises you for being silly enough to dream true. Or whatever. But we’re not talking about dreams today. We’re talking about singing! Whee!

And how we love to sing around here (mostly me and my daughter. My daughter especially!) We make up songs to our hearts delight, often bordering on the silly and ridiculous. But we have a song for just about any occasion, big or small. My little one has such a capacity to remember every song she hears! And she is often heard making up her own musical hits. Which never fails to put a smile on my face.

Here is a video of my little one singing one of her favorite songs. Click here if you can’t see the video below.

A song will outlive all sermons in the memory.  ~Henry Giles

When we remember to sing, our life feels lighter, softer and so much more beautiful. And when we forget to sing? Oh the seriousness and heaviness of it all! You’d be surprised to how much smoother your day goes when you sing your way through it.

Listening to someone else singing is one thing. To sing yourself is awholenother thing. And many of us need to do more of that! There’s a mind-body-heart connection that happens when we make the words and the music our own and sing fully with our whole self.  It brings us to the Present and wakes us up to the Divine Presence within and without. There is a reason why most spiritual people include songs (or chanting) in their practice.

And so I’m here to encourage and inspire you, dear mama, to sing as often as you can. All day long if you wish! Someone very wise once said, “I don’t sing because I’m happy; I’m happy because I sing.”

Today, I wanted to share a simple song you can sing with your little one to start the morning. I was inspired to create this video after searching for a “circle time morning song” and didn’t find one I liked. So I figured I will make my own and gain a worldwide youtube following. ;P You don’t have to do a formal circle time, unless you want to and it works for you. And of course you can make up your own if you’d like. Which is even better!

Enjoy!

And oh yes, if you’ve been enjoying this blog, it would be AWESOME if you can spread the world. Especially to other moms who you think would love this space. And I really would LOVE to hear from you.

Oh, and yes, as a nod to this new adventure of blending in motherhood + sexuality, let me throw in the idea that there’s no good reason why we should limit our repertoire of songs to “family friendly” tunes.  Bust our your inner diva ( and if prefer to only do so  in the shower, you’re free to do so.) I sometimes put in a Beyonce with my little girl and we rock it to town!  Of course trust your intuition and use your judgment what is appropriate but especially if you have a little girl, model what it means to dissolve the lines between wholesome and sexy!

How fun! This post makes me feel lighter ;) I sing and make my 6 month old do the dance moves to, “If you like it, then you better put a ring on it” by Beyonce. It’s hysterical. He LOVES it! (My 3 yr old loves the Ting Ting’s song: That’s not my name, and Pink’s “Get this party started.”)

@Christa, Beyonce, Baby! :) I love it! Now when we’re singing to Beyonce, I can imagine you and your babe busting out to the same tunes!

Aw! Your daughter is so darling! And you have a beautiful voice as well. It’s so crystal clear. :)

This post really helped me start my day right. The sun hid and left the rain, and with a hundred things to do and no new interviews for my husband, I was melancholy. But no more! Thanks for sharing your perspective with the world. It really does help others!

    Have a great day, Vina!

@Vina Barham, It has indeed! Though my dog was looking at me like I was completely crazy when I was singing to myself yesterday… ;-) And thank you for the comment on my RHH entry–that was such a sweet thing to say. Did I miss your entry? (I saw your comment that you’d be entering and was looking forward to watching it!)
