I like to tidy up because I can’t stand a mess.
It makes my skin crawl.
I have much much lower tolerance for it than my husband and of course, my 5-year old daughter, who loves to sprinkle magic dust (aka glitter) around the house and still thinks our white walls are like blank canvases inviting her artistic expression.
But dirt and stuff? I can tolerate.
The only motivation I have for cleaning the house is that I want everyone to be healthy.
So I try.
(Okay, let me say something about “laziness” – I really don’t think it’s a bad thing. When we’re resisting something we need to do, I believe that it’s just our body telling us something. So instead of working against laziness, we work with it!)
But it’s so hard to get myself all psyched up to actually do the deed.
I thought I’d share my 3 Essential Secrets to actually cleaning the house.
1. Diffuse a cleansing blend essential oil.
I am an Essential Oil Junkie and a couple of weeks ago, I got doterra Purify Essential Oil in the mail, which is a blend of the following oils: Lemon, Lime, Fir, Pine, Citronella, Melaleuca and Cilantro. The smell is absolutely divine! I put a couple of drops in my diffuser and I have a clean-smelling house before I even clean! It eliminates odors and other contaminates naturally. It also purifies the air and the environment without the synthetic chemicals that is often in store-bought cleaning products. Having a clean smelling house puts me in the mood of actually cleaning my home instantly.
(Also? You can add this blend to your laundry instead of those icky laundry sheets and they come out smelling soooo good! I sell these oils so if you are interested, you can head on over to my shop here.)
2. Put on some movement-inducing music.
You gotta have fun when you do something you have to do but rather not. SO…..put on some JAMS! Or whatever gets you in that state.
You might even clean the whole house if you put on the right music!
3. Use natural cleaning products you love.
I hate using bleach and anything that smells like it’s going to knock me out if I inhale it in too much. We think the stronger it smells, the better it must clean. But bleach is bleach is bleach. I’ll write another article on why we really should NOT be using bleach EVER, among the many other cleaning products the big guys say we need to keep our home clean.
Also, pick up some cleaning tools you adore. I have this really cute pair of cleaning gloves I got from target and I love putting them on when I clean. Like I said, if you are doing something you have to do but rather not, you might as well have fun doing it.
4. Do it in increments.
I try not to clean everything at once. Just a little bit here and there. That way, it’s not overwhelming. Plus, it makes it easier to celebrate your wins! Yes I got the bath tub clean today! WHEEEE! Now I will clean the toilet in 15 minutes after I take a little wine break.
5. Define your wins.
If your mom was a clean-freak and kept the floors sparkling and shiny all the time when you were growing up, listen. You don’t have to be like that, if you don’t want to. Maybe you’re like me and you just want the house minimally clean because you let your kids actually play and live in the house and you’d rather not stress over it.
Follow your own motivation and get it done your style.
Define your wins and enjoy a clean house, your way.
